3M has developed technology it says will allow under-display optical fingerprint sensors on mobile devices with LCD displays, enabling fingerprint biometrics on smartphones with edge-to-edge LCD screens.

 

The new 3M Near Infrared Transmission System (3M NITS) allows phone manufacturers to offer devices with the same display, security and performance as OLED devices, but at a much lower price, according to the company announcement. It provides an advanced, micro-thin 3M display films that allow optical fingerprint sensors to capture fingerprint data through the display, enabling the home button which houses biometric sensors in many devices to be removed without losing the biometrics.

 

The technology not only allows fingerprint sensors to be located under the screen, 3M says they can be placed anywhere within the display, to suit convenience or usability preferences. 3M NITS technology can also support unlocking with facial biometrics or gesture recognition. The films used do not make the LCD display thicker than conventional LCD systems, and displays maintain 97 percent or more of their brightness, 3M claims. Further, their use can improve viewing angles to actually improve user experience.

 

“The 3M NITS technology helps LCD smartphones better compete with newer OLED alternatives, giving consumers the modern full-screen displays they want, with attractive LCD pricing,” said Quinn Sanford, an application specialist with 3M’s Display Materials & Systems Division. “Security is also a key benefit of the 3M NITS technology. Our research has found that 80 percent of smartphone owners use a fingerprint sensor to unlock their phones. The 3M NITS technology allows LCD smartphones to retain this capability, now as part of the phone’s display.”

 

Xiaomi is among smart device brands already using 3M NITS to redesign enhanced LCD smartphones.

In addition to smartphones and other devices with displays, 3M NITS technology can be integrated with non-display devices, such as for access control.

 

The backlight module in LCD devices has been a barrier to under-display fingerprinting, but the Redmi Note 8 Pro was reported to sport one earlier this year. GSMArena now shows the Redmi Note 8 Pro as having a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, however.

 

An Apple patent application showing an optical under-display fingerprint sensor for its Touch ID was recently published by the U.S. Patent Office.

IR Emitter/Sensor(NITS-ESR) + Reflector 필름(NITS-R) + Diffuser 필름(NITS-D) + Collimator 필름(NITS-C) 으로 구성되나 보네요.

Reflector 필름(NITS-R)과 Diffuser(NITS-D) 사이의 흰색 물체는 Light Guide Plate라고 함.

동영상을 보면, 지문뿐만아니라 얼굴, 제스처 인식도 가능하다고 말하고 있음.

Goodix/BOE처럼 구멍을 뚫거나 Photodiode를 이용하지 않았고 98%이상이면 성능도 더 좋다고 볼 수 있음.

기존 제품과의 차별성은 LCD패널만을 지원하지만 (상용화 가능한) 최초의 전화면 지문인식 솔루션이라는 것.

또한, 가장 저렴한 지문인식, 얼굴인식, 제스처인식이 동시에 가능한 솔루션이라는 것.

Under Display 솔루션이라 패널업체에 부담도 없음.

 

얼굴인식에는 인공지능 AI알고리즘이 들어가야함. 3M이 이것까지 ?

제스처 인식은 간단한 행동을 등록 관리 필요 ?

홍채인식은 렌즈, 필터가 필요해서 뺀것 같은데 지문인식뿐만 아니라 정맥인식도 가능할 것인가 ?

그런데, 왜 LCD만 지원가능한 것 처럼 했을까 ? 왜 OLED를 지원하지 못할까 ?

--->개인적으로 , 3M은 경쟁자가 있는 OLED시장보다는 BOE/Goodix 편법(기술적), 시장 1위라는 벽이 있지만 현재, 무주공산인 LCD패널 시장에서 포지션닝, 성과를 낸 후에 OLED시장을 넘볼 것으로 예상. 기술적으로 LCD패널이 더 두꺼운데 완성도 높은 솔루션이라면 분명 성과를 낼 것으로 보인다.
